We started our business in May of 2004 with a 1979 Chevy pick-up truck, a 20ft. trailer, and a single chainsaw. As we began to pick up steam, we purchased an old 1984 chipper truck and one of the old drum style chippers. We thought we were something back then! In the beginning we were only doing residential work, and we were only focused on a small section of the city.
As we slowly picked up steam, we started to gain notoriety in the Kansas City Northland area, and our reputation preceded us. In a matter of 3-4 years we had gone from a 1 truck company with 1 employee (the owner and a helper) struggling to stay afloat, to a 3 truck operation with 4 employees and a steady work load.
Everything seemed to be heading in the right direction until mid 2008. When the economy took a hit, so did our business. To keep ourselves from going under, we had to make cuts in numerous areas of our operation, and it hurt. However, it was only one change that really saved us; we opened up our coverage area and began working the entire Kansas City MO/KS metro area. By doing such, we had to travel more for our work, but the workload remained steady. And by late 2009 we were growing again.
That small change might seem obvious to some, but it is rather difficult to effectively serve a city the size of Kansas City. We had to acquire numerous city's business licenses and comply with the USDOT federal trucking regulations.
In 2009 we began seeking commercial contracts. This aspect of our business is what has driven it to where we are today. While we only offer our residential services in the Kansas City metro area, we regularly perform commercial contracts that take us all over the nation. This has all but removed the 'seasonality' in our line of work.
Near the end of 2011 we had crews operating in Missouri, Kansas, Ohio, Tennessee, and Kentucky. We serve several disaster organizations, FEMA, and other property management companies. We've worked under the direction of the U.S. Army, Comcast, and the USDA.
