Fact: Tree work is ranked the #2 most dangerous job in the world.
Requesting insurance proof is probably the most important question you can ask a tree care provider. We urge you to verify our insurances at any time, and encourage you to verify our competitors policies as well. Often times a competitor that severely underbids us in an estimate may not have the proper coverages necessary for your work. An under-insured tree company is a liability to you and their employees. If they do not have proper insurances, you may be held liable for accidents and injuries that occur on your property, irregardless of what they may say or have given you. Please, verify all insurance claims made by any company seeking to work on your property.
1. Workers Compensation - We carry a Workman Compensation policy through MEM of $1,000,000 per accident. If any of our employees have an accident or bodily injury on your property, they will be covered under this policy.
2. General Liability - We carry a General Liability policy of $1,000,000 per incident with a $2,000,000 general aggregate. If we are responsible for damaging your property (house, cars, etc.), this policy will cover the costs of repairs. Please note that this definition does not guarantee our liability, in all instances (possible negligence, etc.).
Hence, workers compensation covers our employees physically, and general liability covers our actions, respectively. Whomever you decide to hire, they need to have proof of both, and a piece of paper is not legitimate proof. You must contact their agent and request proof of insurance. Insurance certificates that are frequently given to homeowners display coverages on a 1 year expiration date; however, if the company or individual fails to pay their premium as scheduled, the policy will be canceled, and the declaration paper they gave you will be void and useless.
